Our Products

Focusing on the supply chain aspect, Otar ensures a steady provision of high-quality Ferrochrome and Alloy products to meet the demands of various sectors. This commitment to maintaining a reliable supply chain underscores their dedication to serving the market effectively.

Beyond production, Otar also places a strong emphasis on beneficiation processes to enhance the quality of its output. This involves a series of meticulous steps, starting with the crushing and milling of run-of-mine ore followed by the utilization of dense media separation techniques to sort the ore into distinct size fractions. Notably, removal of silica from finer fractions using gravity and elutriation separation methods enhances the purity of the final products. Additionally, a systematic screening process ensures the attainment of specialized grades, paving the way for the development of tailored solutions for specific market needs.

One of the noteworthy aspects of Otar’s product range is the chemical grade products used in the chrome chemical industry. This particular grade, renowned for its low silica content, serves as a vital feedstock for the production of sodium dichromate. Widely accepted by the industry, this chemical grade product exemplifies the company’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions to strategic sectors.

Moreover, the foundry-grade products offered by Otar find extensive application as moulding sand in the casting industry. The unique properties of chrome, such as its low coefficient of thermal expansion and efficient heat transfer capabilities, make it a preferred material in this domain. With a meticulous screening process to ensure a specific size distribution, these foundry-grade products meet the exacting requirements of the industry, with parameters like acid demand values and pH levels playing a crucial role in their usability.

Chrome Alloys

Ferrochrome is an essential ingredient for the production of stainless steel, and is an alloy of iron and chromium with a chromium content of between 50 and 55 percent. Stainless steel depends on chrome for its appearance and its resistance to corrosion.

Ferrochrome production is essentially a carbothermic reduction operation taking place at high temperatures. The ore – an oxide of chromium and iron – is reduced by coal and coke to form an iron-chromium alloy called ferrochrome. The heat for this reaction comes from the electric arc formed between the tips of the 14 electrodes in the bottom of the furnace and the furnace hearth. This arc creates temperatures of about 2 800°C. In the process of smelting, over 3 500 kilowatt-hours of electricity are consumed for each ton of ferrochrome produced.

Tapping takes place intermittently. When enough smelted ferrochrome has accumulated in the hearth of the furnace, the tap hole is drilled open and a stream of molten metal and slag rushes down a trough into a chill or ladle. The ferrochrome solidifies in large castings, while the slag is separated and stockpiled for further processing. The product is crushed and screened to exact customer specifications. Alternatively, the ferrochrome is granulated into a flowing stream of water.
With a total capacity of approximately one million tons per year, Otar Chrome ranks as one of the largest producers of ferrochrome in the world. In addition, it is also a substantial producer of metallurgical ferrosilicon, a silicon-rich alloy used in steel production company’s commitment to delivering innovative solutions to strategic sectors.
